The choice depends on several variables: the size of the order, the budget, the type of design and the fabric on which the logo or print is to land. Before going into the details of each technology, it’s worth asking yourself three questions.

How many units are planned to be ordered? Screen printing is most cost-effective for larger runs – the more pieces, the lower the unit cost. Embroidery and digital printing are more flexible in terms of volume.

What does your logo look like? Designs with lots of colors, gradients or fine details come out best in digital technologies. Simple logos with a few colors in screen printing or embroidery.

Where and how long should the garment work? For example, a T-shirt with a company logo becomes part of an employee’s closet and accompanies him or her on a daily basis. The longer it looks good, the longer it works for brand visibility. This is an argument for the quality of both the product and the marking method.

T-shirt embroidery – when is it worth choosing it

Computer embroidery involves embroidering a design directly on the fabric using needles and thread. The effect is three-dimensional, durable and if done well looks very prestigious.

When embroidery works best:

The logo is relatively simple, with no fine lines or small details that may “fade” during sewing.

You care about image and premium effect: polo shirts, sweatshirts or corporate jackets

You want quality that will last for years of use

The material is thick: fleece or cotton

When is it worth considering another method:

The logo has a lot of details or gradients: in this case DTF or sublimation will work better

The design covers a large area, such as full-print on the back

Fabric is quite thin: embroidery may deform it, better bet on transfer

Screen printing – best for large print runs

Screen printing is a classic, proven method of applying color through a stencil directly to fabric. Each color requires a separate screen, so the more colors there are, the more difficult it is to make the decoration perfectly.

Why does screen printing dominate for larger runs? The cost of screen preparation is a fixed expense independent of the number of pieces. The more you order, the more the unit price drops. For hundreds or thousands of company T-shirts, screen printing is the most cost-effective option with the best durability.

When screen printing works best:

Large print run with one design: the more pieces, the lower the unit cost

The logo consists of 1-4 solid colors, without gradients

You care about intense, vivid colors and clear contrast

T-shirts will be heavily used: screen printing is very durable

When is it worth considering another method:

With a small print run, the fixed cost of screen preparation translates into a higher unit cost – in which case DTF or flex may be more economical

The logo has a lot of colors or gradients: each additional color is a separate screen. For complex designs, DTF will work better

Each T-shirt is to be different: when personalizing each piece individually, digital technology will be more flexible

HD screen printing is a variant of the same technology, in which the print is more convex and textured. The effect is similar to embroidery, but achieved by the printing method. It works well for projects where you want a clear, three-dimensional aesthetic of the logo.

Puff is another technique based on screen printing – a special ink swells when heated, creating a relief effect. What they have in common is that there is no need to prepare screens or dies, the design goes straight from the file to the fabric. However, they differ in technology, application and end result.

DTF

DTF is the dominant method in the digital printing category today. The design is printed on a special transfer film, which is then thermally transferred to the fabric. DTF works on almost any fabric, regardless of composition or color.

When DTF works best:

The design is graphically complex: illustration, photography, gradient, many colors without sharp boundaries

T-shirts are supposed to be eye-catching in design, not just logos

Want to personalize each piece differently

You care about flexibility: DTF works well on cotton and polyester

When is it worth considering another method:

For very large print runs with a simple, one-color logo, screen printing may be more economical

If you want an impalpable print, it’s worth knowing that DTF creates a palpable layer on the fabric, in which case sublimation may be a better choice

Sublimation

Sublimation is a method in which the ink under the influence of temperature penetrates directly into the structure of the fiber, creating a permanent, photorealistic effect. The print is imperceptible to the touch and does not flake off over time.

When sublimation works best:

Sportswear, jackets, polyester gadgets

The project requires full-color, photorealistic printing on the entire surface (full-print)

You care about durability: sublimation printing practically does not fade

When is it worth considering another method:

The fabric contains a small amount of polyester or is dark in color

You order classic cotton T-shirts: here DTF or screen printing will be a more practical choice

Flex and flock

Flex and flock are plotter-cut foil prints that are thermally transferred to fabric. Flex gives a smooth, glossy surface, while flock gives a velvety, matte texture. A well-designed internal tag is a detail that the user is sure to notice and appreciate.

When it’s a good idea to take care of the tags:

You produce garments for sale or in the premium gifting segment – the brand label increases the perceived value of the product

Want to replace the standard manufacturer’s label with your own branding

You want a consistent visual identity across all brand touchpoints

Comparative table of marking methods

Embroidery

Silk screen printing

DTF

Sublimation

Flex/Flock

Best use

Premium clothing, polos, sweatshirts

Large series, events, uniforms

Complex graphics, personalization

Full-print, sportswear

Simple logo, smaller series

Material

Any (except very thin)

Any

Any

Light polyester

Any

Durability

Very high

Very high

High

Very high

High

Visual effect

Premium, 3D

Vivid colors, flat

Photorealistic

Photorealistic, no texture

Smooth or velvety

Complexity of the project

Simple graphics, no gradients

Simple, up to 4-5 colors

Any

Any

Simple shape, 1 color

Outlay

Flexible

Cost-effective for large batches

Flexible

Flexible

Flexible

Personalisation

Possible

Not very flexible

Very easy

Possible

Possible

Not sure about the choice? Send your project and our team will select the technology and prepare a quote.

Which marking method is the most cost-effective?

There is no universal answer, because it all depends on what you order and what you expect. A few examples to help you decide.

Corporate event t-shirts for the whole team with one logo
Here screen printing will work best. A large print run, a single design and a limited color palette are ideal conditions for this technology: the unit cost will be the lowest and durability will be high.

T-shirts with illustrated graphics and gradients
In this case, DTF or sublimation will work well, depending on the fabric. A complex design with multiple colors and smooth tonal transitions is a challenge for screen printing and embroidery. On cotton, DTF will work, on polyester, sublimation will give a photorealistic effect without a perceptible layer of printing.

Polo shirts for the sales department to look premium
Here embroidery would be the best choice.
